Under the general direction of the Board of Commissioners, the Equalization Department directs the valuation of real and personal property and the equalization of property tax assessments to create uniformity by class among the 23 taxing jurisdictions within the county. The department also assures that assessment standards mandated by the Headlee amendment are maintained, explains departmental procedures and the assessment process to county residents, provides information on property descriptions and assessments, and prepares and files necessary reports with the State Tax Commission.
