Birth Certificate Information

The Vital Records office is open to in person transactions Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

Birth Records are available from 1867 to the current date. Birth records are confidential and are available only to the person or parents of the person named in the records. Photo ID is required to obtain a copy of a birth certificate. In accordance with MCL 333.2882: Birth certificates 100 years old or older are available for genealogy purposes.

The cost of a birth certificate (certified copy only) is $30 for the first copy and $5 for each additional copy. If you would like the birth record mailed to you, you must provide us with a self addressed envelope with a stamp. 

Need a Birth Certificate in a Hurry?

You can obtain a birth certificate in the following ways:

  • Apply in person on Monday through Friday from 8 am to 4 pm
  • Fax your Request for Certified Copy of Birth Record and Credit/Debit Card Authorization to us, along with your photo ID at 989-831-7474
  • Email your Request for Certified Copy of Birth Record and Credit/Debit Card Authorization to us, along with your photo ID
  • Use our GovPayNow Portal to pay for your birth record instead of sending your Debit or Credit card information to us, but you will still need to either email or fax us your photo identification

Remember, you can only receive a certified copy of a birth certificate from the County Clerk in the county in which you were born or the Department of Community Health in Lansing. A service cannot obtain a certificate for you!
